Barramundi Fly Fishing in Staaten River – Take that Memorable Trip Down South
For some people, fly fishing is a luxurious activity while some consider it as a creative kind of art. No matter how enthusiasts consider it, this is a great activity that they share with friends, families and colleagues. This activity is done leisurely during vacations, while others do it professionally. Here are a few important information that enthusiasts should know to make their fishing trip a productive one:
1. Locations. For as long as fishermen follow state and local rules covering the activity, there isn’t any wrong timing or spot to throw the fly rod. In Australia, there are several places which are considered as a fishing haven – the Staaten River.
Staaten River is located in Cape York Peninsula. This vast wetland is the home for several plants and wildlife. Barramundi is among the many species of fish that can be caught in the area. Only a few people are allowed to visit this place yearly. The place is ideal for fishing between April and November.
2. Fish Species. Barramundi can grow to a length of can reach up to 1.5m and can weigh up to 50kg. This specie has been farmed and bred in large numbers over the past decades. They are found in fresh and coastal waters in many different places around Australia.
Barramundi fly fishing is very popular among anglers around the world because it is so challenging to catch this fish. Once hooked, the Barramundi is sure to put up a fight to let go from the hook. This tests the skills of anglers with so fishing using the right lures and at the right time is the key to make every fishing trip productive.
3. Techniques. Barramundi fly fishing can vary depending on the seasons, locations and even on the actual hour and situation of the fishing area. They primarily feed during nighttime. However, anglers can still catch them when there is changing of the light and tide. They usually stay near submerged rocks or logs while waiting for their prey.
Although they are available anytime of the year, the Barramundi stay in different places depending on the season. Usually, they are abundant from November until March. As for the preferred times of the day, it’s best to catch Barramundi during dusk and dawn.
4. Equipment. A flimsy rod is never suitable for this type of fishing. Barramundi’s average size is at 40lb therefore the right rod/reel is very important. When fishing in rivers and estuaries, a bait casting rod and reel with 6-8 kilogram line is necessary.
The lure must also be suitable to fit into the terrain. A shallow running lure is used when fishing upstream or downstream. When fishing in deep snags and steep banks, a lure that goes down to the fish is needed. Colors such as brown, pink, purple and natural are ideal choices.
