The History Of Rare Earth Magnets
Originating more than 30 years ago, rare earth magnets are composites of rare elements from the earth that are forged into powerful magnets. There is no category of magnet that is stronger than a rare earth magnet, including the more common alnico and ferrite variety. The two brands of rare earth magnet in existence are the samarium-cobalt and the neodymium. Both have distinct uses and varying levels of strength from one another.
Samarium-cobalt magnets are stronger than every other kind of magnet except for its rare-earth counterpart, the neodymium. Samarium-cobalt magnets are not employed as often as neodymium due to their more brittle nature, inferior magnetic field, and more expensive price. When it comes to high levels of magnetic strength in higher operating temperatures, however, the samarium-cobalt is the perfect tool as opposed to neodymium.
Neodymium magnets are the strongest available and are cheaper than samarium-cobalt magnets. Comprised of neodymium, boron, and iron, these magnets possess the greatest magnetic attraction but cannot resist oxidation and temperatures as well as the other type of rare earth magnet, the samarium-cobalt. To combat such corrosion, neodymium rare earth magnets are coated for protection with zinc, nickel, or gold.
Rare earth magnets of only a few centimeters in length can cause significant damage to the body. Because of this, they must be handled with the proper attention and safety precautions. Due to the power exerted by these types of magnets, injury can occur if a body part becomes pinched between two or more magnets. Even if the handler is only working with one rare earth magnet, care should be taken to ensure that they do not step between the magnet and metal surfaces. If allowed to come in too close of a proximity, separate magnets can attract and hit one another with such speed that the magnets can shatter and send projectiles through the air, further threatening anyone nearby. These magnets will also erase many type of media that employs magnetic fields, including the hard drives of computers and credit and debit cards.
In the real world, rare earth magnets have several applications that are used in many different devices. The most common use is in computer hard disks and audio speakers. They are also found in the brakes of fishing reels, the motors of cordless power tools, and dynamos. Magnetic levitation trains incorporate rare earth magnets to lift and propel across train tracks. Rare earth magnets are also used in stop motion animation to anchor models, in roller coasters that use hydraulic power to accelerate, in MRI machines for medical imaging, and in pickups that are installed on electric guitars, violins, and bass guitars to capture and convert vibrations.
Rare earth magnets have become an integral part of modern technology. Their power is unparalleled and can be harnessed for a range of commercial and scientific endeavors. Like most great resources, they come with certain risks that must be accounted for in order to preclude injury, but if handled with the utmost attention, they constitute one of science’s best inventions of the past 40 years.
