Most people in the Fish Section are such jokes. Don’t the higher more intellectual half of you guys agree?
Some things that people say are absolutely ridiculous. When someone asks something about plants, CO2, protein skimmers, etc, no one answers at all. They just answer, “rule of thumb is one gallon for each fish” which I find extremely ignorant.
I suppose but one thing that should really be enforced in Y!A better is if you don’t know the answer, don’t answer it.

When’s the last time you heard someone ask about ask about the correct rate of power for their sump pump? Or the correct way to DIY a trickle filter?
Another trend I’ve noticed that very few people actually use the fish’s scientific names. They even refuse to acknowledged their families sometimes. (Typical question)- “Can I keep a Angelfish with a cichlid?” Angels are cichlids……………………….
Yes, the 1 inch per gallon myth is widely spread about. Anyone thinks it’s truth can place a 10″ Oscar in a 10 gallon and see how it works.
I’ve not trying to insult them, but I feel like they need to educate themselves further before they pursue this hobby. We all have to start somewhere, and for me, that was a trip to the library with a stack of books to read.
The employees at chain stores are not helping. I saw a chain-store-lady give a person a goldfish for a 2 gallon…..I am never buying my fish from chain stores, I only buy from local businesses or breeders.
However, I feel like it is my duty to help these people out as best as I can. Like I said before, we all start somewhere. This is great, rewarding hobby, and I really wish more people would participate in it. But fish are not furniture, they are living, feeling, and intelligent creatures that do not deserve to die in a bowl overnight…. When properly raised, fish can live happy, healthy, and long lives in the hands of an experienced aquarist.
